Keystone for the Bund in Shanghai, CITAB-CTBUH selects BundSOHO as one of the four best high-rise buildings in China
Skyline of Shanghai Bund and Pudong
More than half a century after the last new building at theBund, Shanghai’s historic promenade along the Huangpu River, thefamous row of bank and commercial buildings from colonial times hasbeen rounded off with a new architectural highlight. As the lastbuilding – for now – in the first row along the river, the BundSOHO business and office ensemble, designed by gmp Architects vonGerkan, Marg and Partners, adds to the characteristic skyline whichgave rise to Shanghai’s reputation as the „Paris of the east“. Thepractice had won the international competition organized by theSOHO China Group in 2011.
View of the historic Bund area from Pudong
For tourists and the locals, the Bund promenade along the riverbank is the attraction of the city per se – a recognizable, visualfixed point in the cityscape of this flourishing metropolis. Fromhere, a spectacular vista opens to the Pudong finance and businessdistrict. Compared to this district’s mushrooming skyline, the rowof fifty historic buildings on the Bund represents a contiguousarchitectural ensemble in spite of all later developments in thesurrounding area and changes of use, and the stylistic variety thatranges from Neo- Gothic to Art Deco. For the Bund SOHO design, thismeant that the history of the place had to be continued withoutnostalgia, following the unwritten rules, by creating a succinctend point to the row of buildings, in particular at the seambetween the colonial town and the historic city center with itsGucheng Park and Yu Garden open areas.
Water front at the Bund
The design, which occupies a prominent position, comprises sixbuildings which together create a composi- tion of slabs combinedin a sculptural, three-dimensional way with projections andrecesses. This effect is achieved with a graded system of taperinglesenes which merge into the solid wall panels of the recessedstories and, in this way, seen from a distance, complete the imageof the slabs – a directional system with façades of differentcharacters which unifies the different scales of theneighborhood.
Staggered composition of slab buildings
The four high-rise office buildings ranging between 60 and 135meters in height form a distinct edge to the development towardsthe south and, on the other hand, replicate the sequence of gablesof the histo- ric promenade facing the Bund. Two further low-risebuildings to the west and north which, like the lower stories ofthe office buildings, accommodate high-quality internationalrestaurants and retail outlets, create a transition to the scale ofthe neighboring buildings. Between them a number of small lanes andsquares create a network of connections with the neighborhood thatcontinues the structure of the circulation system with itstraditional orientation towards the river. The design concept ofthe slabs is replicated here in a ribbon structure and is repeatedin the details of the foyers.
Matching the scale of neighboring buildings
As visitors move about, the Bund SOHO development appears as aholistically designed, lively ensemble which changes dynamicallywith the changing angles of view. As one approaches the developmentalong the pro- menade or the Huangpu River, it appears to mergeinto one solid architectural sculpture before, when get- tingcloser, a surprising, almost immaterial glazed feature appears inthe front elevation. Compared to the numerous individual newbuildings of recent times, the Bund SOHO makes a significantcontextual contribu- tion to Shanghai’s cityscape.
