PROFIBUS – the proven, rugged bus system for automationengineering applications
The requirements of users for an open, non-proprietarycommunication system have resulted in the specification andstandardization of the PROFIBUS protocol.
PROFIBUS defines the technical and functional features of aserial fieldbus system, with which the distributed field automationdevices in the lower area (sensor/actuator level) can be networkedup to the mid performance range (cell level).
Standardization according to IEC 61158/EN 50170 secures yourinvestments for the future.
Using the conformity and interoperability test performed by thetest laboratories authorized by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International(PI) and the certification of the devices by PI, users have thesecurity of knowing that the quality and functionality isguaranteed, even in multi-vendor installations.
PROFIBUS versionsTwo different PROFIBUS versions have been defined in order tocomply with the widely varying requirements at field level:
PROFIBUS PA (Process Automation) – the version forapplications in process automation. PROFIBUS PA uses theintrinsically safe transmission technology specified in IEC61158-2.
PROFIBUS DP (Distributed Periphery) – this version, whichis optimized for speed, is specifically tailored to thecommunication of automation systems with distributed I/O stationsand drives. PROFIBUS DP sets itself apart as a result of very shortresponse times and high noise immunity, and replacescost-intensive, parallel signal transfer with 24 V and measuredvalue transfer utilizing 0/4 … 20 mA technology.

Bus participants on PROFIBUS DPPROFIBUS DP makes a distinction between two different masterclasses and one device class:
DP master class 1
For PROFIBUS DP, DP master class 1 is the central component. Ina defined and continually repeating message cycle the centralmaster station exchanges information with distributed stations (DPdevices).
DP master class 2
Devices of this type (programming, configuring or operatorcontrol devices) are used during commissioning, for configuring theDP system, for diagnostics or for operating the active plant orsystem. A DP master class 2 can, for example, read input, output,diagnostic and configuration data of the devices.
DP device
A DP device is an I/O device which receives output informationor setpoints from the DP master, and as response, returns inputinformation, measured values and actual values to the DP master. ADP device never sends data automatically, but only when requestedby the DP master.
The quantity of input and output information depends on thedevice, and for each DP device in each send direction can be amaximum of 244 bytes.

Functional scope in DP masters and DP devicesThe functional scope can differ between DP masters andDP devices. The different functional scopes are classified asDP-V0, DP-V1 and DP-V2.
DP-V0 communication functions
The DP-V0 master functions consist of "Configuration","Parameter Assignment" and "Reading Diagnostics Data", as well ascyclic reading of input data/actual values and writing outputdata/setpoints.
DP-V1 communication functions
The DP-V1 function expansions make it possible to performacyclic read and write functions as well as processing cyclic datacommunication. This type of device must be supplied with extensiveparameterization data during start-up and during normal operation.These acyclically transferred parameterization data are only rarelychanged in comparison to the cyclic setpoints, actual values, andmeasured values, and are transferred at lower priority in parallelwith the cyclic high-speed user data transfer. Detailed diagnosticinformation can be transferred in the same way.
DP-V2 communication functions
The extended DP‑V2 master functions mainly comprise functionsfor isochronous operation and device-to-device communicationbetween DP devices.
Isochronous mode:
Isochronous mode is implemented by means of an equidistant signalin the bus system. This cyclic, equidistant cycle is sent by the DPmaster to all bus nodes in the form of a Global Control Telegram.Master and devices can then synchronize their applications withthis signal. The signal jitter between cycles is less than1 μs.Device-to-device communication:
The "publisher/subscriber" model is used to implementdevice-to-device communication. Devices declared as publishers maketheir input data/actual values and measured values available toother devices, the subscribers, for reading. This is performed bysending the response frame to the master as a broadcast.Device-to-device communication is therefore a cyclic process.

PROFIBUS with SINAMICSSINAMICS uses the PROFIBUS DP protocol. SINAMICS drives canonly be used as DP devices.
PROFIBUS with SIMOTIONSIMOTION uses the PROFIBUS DP protocol. SIMOTION can beused both as a DP master and a DP device. The DP‑V0, DP‑V1 andDP‑V2 communication functions are supported.
PROFIdrive – the standardized drive interface for PROFINET andPROFIBUSPROFIdrive defines the device behavior and technique to accessinternal device data for electric drives connected to PROFINET andPROFIBUS – from basic frequency converters up to high-performanceservo controllers.
It describes in detail the practical use of communicationfunctions – device-to-device communication, equidistance and clockcycle synchronization (isochronous mode) in drive applications. Inaddition, it specifies all device characteristics which influenceinterfaces connected to a controller over PROFINET or PROFIBUS.This also includes the state machine (sequence control), theencoder interface, scaling of values, definition of standardtelegrams, access to drive parameters, etc.
The PROFIdrive profile supports both central as well asdistributed motion control concepts.
What are profiles?For devices and systems used in automation technology, profilesdefine properties and modes of behavior. This allows manufacturersand users to define common standards. Devices and systems thatcomply with such a cross-manufacturer profile, are interoperable ona fieldbus and, to a certain degree, can be interchanged.
Are there different types of profiles?A distinction is made between what are known as applicationprofiles (general or specific) and system profiles:
Application profiles (also device profiles) predominantly referto devices (e.g. drives) and include an agreed selection regardingbus communication as well as specific device applications.
System profiles describe classes of systems, including masterfunctionality, program interfaces and integration resources.
PROFIdrive has been specified by the PROFIBUS and PROFINETInternational (PI) user organization, and is specified as astandard that is fit for the future through standardIEC 61800‑7.
The basic philosophy: Keep it simpleThe PROFIdrive profile tries to keep the drive interface assimple as possible and free from technology functions. As a result,referencing models as well as the functionality and performance ofthe PROFINET/PROFIBUS master have either no or only littleinfluence on the drive interface.
One drive profile – different application classesThe integration of drives into automation solutions depends verystrongly on the particular drive application. In order to be ableto address the complete, huge bandwidth of drive applications –from basic frequency converters up to synchronized multi-axissystems with a high dynamic performance – using just one profile,PROFIdrive defines six application classes, to which most driveapplications can be assigned:
Class 1 – standard drives (pumps, fans, agitators, etc.)
Class 2 – standard drives with technological functions
Class 3 – positioning drives
Class 4 – motion control drives with central, higher-levelmotion control intelligence and the patented "Dynamic ServoControl" positioning concept
Class 5 – motion control drives with central, higher-levelmotion control intelligence and position setpoint interface
Class 6 – motion control drives with distributed motion controlintelligence integrated in the drives

The device model of PROFIdrivePROFIdrive defines a device model comprising function modules,which interoperate inside the device and which reflect theintelligence of the drive system. These modules have objectsassigned to them which are described in the profile and are definedwith respect to their functions. The overall functionality of adrive is therefore described through the sum of its parameters.
In contrast to other drive profiles, PROFIdrive defines only theaccess mechanisms to the parameters as well as a subset of profileparameters (approx. 30) such as the fault buffer, drivecontrol and device identification.
All other parameters are vendor-specific which gives drivemanufacturers great flexibility with respect to implementingcontrol functions. The elements of a parameter are accessedacyclically over data records.
As a communication protocol, PROFIdrive uses DP-V0, DP-V1, andthe DP-V2 expansions for PROFIBUS including the functions"Device-to-Device Communication" and "Isochronous Operation", orPROFINET IO with real-time classes RT and IRT.
