CERTONAL® FC-742

CertonalFC-742 is a clear, low viscosity solution of a surface modifierfluorochemical polymer coating carried in a hydrofluoroethersolvent.

Certonal FC-742 can be used as an anti-migration barrier to preventlubricant materials migrating from critical wear components ingyroscopes, precision bearings, MEMS spindles and similarmechanical, critical wear devices.

The solvent is non-flammable, has low toxicity and providesacceptable environmental properties for today’s demandingelectronic applications. When applied to clean, moisture-freesurfaces such as copper, aluminium, ceramic, steel, tin or glass,Certonal FC-742 dries to a thin transparent film with required inmany diverse applications. Certonal FC-742 will form a clear,nearly invisible, uniform film that is insoluble in solvents suchas heptane, toluene and water. These films can endure up to 175°Cfor prolonged periods and maintain good repellency.

Certonal FC-742 is an extremely stable surface modifierfluoropolymer rich in carbon-fluorine bonds. Carbon-fluorine bondsgive the coating it’s stable characteristics. The dry film is botholeophobic and hydrophobic. As the surface energy is so low, incomparison to coatings based on polyethylene and PTFE, manymaterials with low surface tension characteristics, such assilicone oils and lubricating oils, bead and drain freely from aCertonal FC-742 coated surface. The low surface energy of thecoating also helps to prevent solid materials adhering to thesurface.

The low surface energy films cast from Certonal FC-742 haveexcellent repellency to hydrocarbon oils, silicone oils, syntheticfluids and aqueous solutions. With a surface energy of 11-12dynes/cm, Certonal FC-742 films compare favourably to coatings ofpolyethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene, which have surface energyvalues of approximately 31 and 18 dynes/cm respectively. Thisproperty enables non-solubilising solvents such as heptane, tolueneand water, as well as liquids having low surface tension valuessuch as lubricating oils, silicones etc., to bead and drain freelyfrom coated surfaces whilst leaving the film intact.
