Impact HammersEach PCB® Modally Tuned®, ICP® instrumented impact hammerfeatures a rugged, force sensor that is integrated into thehammer’s striking surface.
“Modal Tuning” is a feature that ensures the structuralcharacteristics of the hammer do not affect measurement results. This is accomplished by eliminating hammer resonances in thefrequency range of interest from corrupting the test data, resulting in more accurate and consistent measurements.
The force sensor provides a measurement of the amplitude andfrequency content of the energy stimulus that is imparted to a testobject. Accelerometers are used in conjunction with the hammer toprovide a measurement of the object’s structural response due tothe hammer blow. A variety of tips supplied with each hammer permitthe energy content of the force impulse to be tailored to suit therequirements of the item under test.
Using multi-channel data acquisition and analysis software, thetest engineer is able to ascertain a variety of mechanicalproperties leading to an understanding of an object’s structuralbehavioral characteristics. Items analyzed can include resonancedetection, mode shapes, transfer characteristics, and structuralhealth – such as crack and fatigue detection.

How do I select an impact hammer for my application? The general rule of thumb to follow is the larger thestructure to excite, the larger the impact hammer required. Someselection guidelines are as follows:
086E80 Electronic Components such as Printed Circuit Boards &Hard Drives
086C01 (TLD086C01) Small Structures, lightly damped panels & frames
086C02, C03, & C04 Mediumsized structures such as Car Frames, Engines, & MachinedParts
(TLD086C02, C03, & C04)
086D05 (TLD086D05) Heavier sizedcomponents such as Pumps & Compressors
086D20 (TLD086D20) Heavy Structures suchas Tool Foundations & Storage Tanks
086D50 (TLD086D50) LargeStructures such as Buildings, Bridges, & Ships
Models with TEDS include the TLD prefix suchas TLD086C01.
